The Japanese Expert Passes Away

Martial arts in general and karate in particular lost the great master Hediki Okamoto (aged 67 years), who passed away on Thursday April 30th, 2009, in Tokyo, after a long struggle with cancer. Master Okamoto's doctor said, "I am amazed at his unforgettable spirit. If it was someone else, he would be gone 6 months ago!" But his spirit was so lively that he continued to communicate and keep in touch with students all around the world while on his death bed and until the last minute.

Karate expert Okamoto graduated in 1967 from Kokoshikan University in Tokyo with a bachelors degree in Politics and Economics. He then finished his masters degree in Karate and was subsequently appointed as the karate instructor and lecturer in the university.

In later years, he was sent by the JKA (Japan Karate Association) to the Middle East and Africa to be the chief instructor of this region. His students over the years topped 2 million, in 40 different countries in the region.

In his youth, he was the world karate champion for several years. He received countless honorary medals from presidents and leaders all around the world, for his dedication to the sport and his expertise.

In addition to his endless giving to the sport, he also worked with humanitarian organizations in Africa and helped the underprivileged. He was known for his noble behavior, high spirit, courage, infinite strength, and his support to all those who needed it. His unique personality influenced his students to follow his footsteps. I, Abdul Rahman Al Haddad (6th Dan JKA), being one of his loyal students, will always be faithful to his instructions and try to be the human that he taught me to be, a true karateka in spirit as well as body.
